Before accepting the yacht
Review the inventory with the operator. Photograph existing damage, check lines and fenders, and identify emergency contacts. Ask for a demonstration of seacocks, bilge pumps, electrical systems, fuel shut-off and safety equipment. If something is unclear or faulty, record it and resolve it before leaving.
Agree what happens on return
Confirm the return berth, timing, fuel arrangements, cleaning and the deposit process. Read the charter agreement for responsibility and reporting requirements. Keep the operator's contact details available. The partner's published notes are useful, but missing instructions must be requested rather than guessed.
Keep an evidence trail
Save dated photos and a list of issues with the boat records. Record engine hours and any work or incident during the trip. At check-out, compare the inventory and condition together and ask for acknowledgement of any disagreement. This checklist is general preparation, not a substitute for the actual charter contract.
