How to prepare to rent out your own boat
Renting out your own boat starts before you welcome your first renter. Make sure it is ready to use, confirm rental insurance cover and create a repeatable handover and return routine.

Check the boat and its equipment
- Inspect the hull, deck, rails, mooring lines and fenders. Fix defects that could affect safe use before accepting a booking.
- Check the engine, steering, battery, bilge and fluid levels according to the manuals. Have unexplained leaks or faults assessed.
- Test lights and onboard equipment. Check safety equipment against your sailing area and official requirements.
- Provide suitable lifejackets for the people expected aboard and explain where all safety equipment is stored.
- Photograph the boat's condition and record existing marks, missing items and maintenance concerns.
Prepare paperwork and ask your insurer
- Check official sources for requirements that apply to private rentals, your boat and the intended waterways, including any required operator documents.
- Ask your marina or berth provider whether rental handovers and use by renters are permitted.
- Ask your insurer whether paid rental is covered, who may operate the boat and what navigation limits or exclusions apply. Request written confirmation.
- Ask about third-party liability, damage, theft, the excess, assistance and how to report a claim. Clarify whether extra cover is needed.
- Prepare clear rental terms covering permitted use, cancellation, deposit handling, fuel, cleaning, late returns and damage reporting. Keep relevant boat documents and instructions accessible.
Clean and prepare for arrival
- Clean seating, deck surfaces and any galley or toilet facilities. Use products suitable for the materials and follow their instructions.
- Dry slippery surfaces, clear drains and remove loose clutter and personal valuables.
- Count the inventory and check that keys, lines, fenders and safety equipment are present and usable.
- Record fuel or battery levels and arrange a realistic route and return plan within the boat's limits.
- Send arrival instructions, the agreed meeting time and a list of documents renters need to bring.
Use a handover checklist
- Check the renter's agreed identification and any required operator documents. Discuss experience rather than assuming competence.
- Walk around together, record existing damage and confirm the inventory, fuel or battery level and return arrangements.
- Demonstrate starting and stopping, steering, mooring and relevant onboard systems. Let the renter practise in a suitable place.
- Explain passenger limits, the permitted sailing area, weather restrictions and local rules. Refer to official information and the boat manual.
- Show emergency equipment and explain what to do after a breakdown or incident. Share contact details and record that the briefing took place.
- Postpone departure if the boat, conditions or renter's ability make the trip unsafe.
Check the boat back in
- Inspect the boat together on return and compare its condition with the departure record.
- Check the inventory, fuel or battery level, cleanliness and any reported faults or incidents.
- Photograph new damage and document both accounts. Follow the agreed terms and insurer's reporting instructions.
- Confirm any outstanding charges transparently and handle the deposit according to the agreed terms.
- Clean, dry and restock the boat. Resolve safety issues before the next rental.
Questions owners ask
- Does my normal boat insurance cover rental?
- Do not assume it does. Describe your intended rental arrangement to your insurer and ask for written confirmation of cover, conditions, exclusions and any extra insurance needed.
- What documents should I ask a renter to bring?
- Check official requirements for your boat and waterways, plus your insurer's conditions. Tell the renter in advance which identification and operator documents are needed, and handle personal data carefully.
- What should a handover checklist include?
- Include condition photos, inventory, fuel or battery level, controls, safety equipment, permitted use, emergency instructions and return arrangements. Use the same record when checking the boat back in.
